With more and more evidence in favour of corrective exercise over manual therapy to address musculoskeletal aches and pain, a group of researchers set about answering this question:
|Are group-based and individual physiotherapy exercise programmes equally effective for musculoskeletal conditions?|
They looked at all available published research on this topic, and found fourteen Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) which compared the effectiveness of group versus individual exercise programs in people with musculoskeletal conditions (low back pain, knee pain, neck pain and shoulder pain).
They found the only differences in pain and disability outcomes were “small and clinically irrelevant”.
The researchers concluded that the additional time and financial costs of individual physiotherapy for musculoskeletal conditions do not result in superior outcomes and that group interventions should be considered more often.
Cross Physio incorporates exercises for postural endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, balance, core stability and strength. The class is in fact “group physiotherapy” and is designed in such a way that all exercises are modified to the individual and any exercise can be substituted altogether with one that is more appropriate for a client.
